I'm a water/wastewater engineer that works closely with the guys doing the work and the plant directors. When crap hits the floor because of startup issues, I'm helping clean it up... The #1 issue the director has is getting good workers and when he does, keeping them. They are great jobs if you don't mind getting dirty, but the perception of being the guy at the poo plant is a big problem. He has lost many good workers because when their kids get to middle school and the bus goes by the plant, their kids catch flack cause dad works at the poo plant. They don't realize the kids dad is a mechanical genius that has kept pumps running perfectly from 1974 to 2024. The push for higher education and the demeaning tone that has created for people working in the crap is a very real problem that has real consequences. These are the men and women that keep your rivers clean and your water safe to drink. Without them it doesn't matter what environmental law you want to pass if you don't have people working hard to make things better.

Always ask yourself, “how many friends will ask you for help creating a spreadsheet on a Saturday?”

I do think college is antiquated (majors that don’t yield work for grads) and specialized skills are needed in today’s emerging market…& with the certification one can pursue a lucrative career without a notable debt load.

The best class I ever had in school was MAchine Shop. Three hours a day for two years taught me enough to land a job in a mold making facility. Having been a farm kid growing up, I was inclined to work with my hands. That education served me well throughout my working life even though I ultimately became a mechanic and truck driver, And at 76 years old, I still can fabricate most anything I need to do whatever I need out of whatever I have on hand.

So sad your audience that day is so stupid and fully immersed in their power and sense of elitism to even care, nor do anything that they are sworn and paid to do, yet a well educated, honest and frank individual unafraid of telling the truth steps into the well and begs them to listen, to break from the clan, to do the right thing.
